RAMPANT UNITED

Manchester United have been rampant in the Premier league so far this campaign, but they recently dropped points in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham. As a result, their archrivals Manchester City have been able to cut the lead for United at the top of the table to just five points. Many have claimed that City had a psychological advantage during the weekend because they played a day earlier than United. City took on Fulham on Saturday and managed to take all three points with a 2-0 victory. United took on Tottenham on Sunday in the league fixture, thus giving City a possible advantage.

The striker Danny Welbeck, though, has rejected such speculation by saying that United are looking to win the league title by being the best and not by looking at the other scores across the Premier league. The young England international has found first-team opportunities limited at the club this season. The arrival of Robin van Persie has meant that he has largely been played out of position or been on the bench for most of the matches. The Dutchman van Persie, though, proved his worth by scoring the only goal for United against Tottenham. Welbeck has made just 8 Premier league starts this season.

“Our main focus is ourselves and we’re not looking at anybody else. Getting three points is the main thing and we’re not looking for any other results. Obviously, City could shorten the gap and it is key that we maintain our seven-point lead. Every game we play in the league is important and the main thing is to go out and get the three points. We can’t watch other teams and see how they are doing. We have to look after ourselves,” said Welbeck in an interview given to the official website of the club.

WELBECK PROGRESSES WELL

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he is extremely pleased with the development shown by England striker Danny Welbeck this season. Danny Welbeck spent the last season on loan at Sunderland. It is a loan spell that has worked in favour of the player after he has been a sensation at Manchester United this season so much so that he has been able to keep out striker Hernandez out of the starting line-up. Hernandez scored 20 goals in his debut season for Manchester United, but has been unable to get game time at United this season due to the form of Welbeck.

Speaking ahead of the most important game of their season, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that he is certainly surprised, but happy about the development made by Welbeck, whose rise to fame has helped England top the charts of the euro betting markets. Welbeck has been the main reason for Wayne Rooney flourishing as a striker for United this season. Rooney has scored 33 goals for United this season, and owes a lot of them due to the work rate of the United youngster. Apart from helping Rooney score all the major goals for United, Welbeck has also been able to chip in with 12 goals this season.

“With Danny being fit again and playing consistently, he’s developed. I think last week we saw something special. I know there was a lot of reference to the Yorke and Cole thing and I think there are similarities to that. I thought Welbeck’s movement was fantastic last week. He did really well. Attacking-wise we were terrific in the second half. Wayne is 26 now and Danny is 21. I would think over the next few years it can only get better. I hope so,” Sir Alex Ferguson said ahead of the Manchester City game. United go into the fixture with a three-point advantage over their rivals.

WELBECK SCORES FOR UNITED

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck was on the score sheet for Manchester United in their match against Bolton. It helped Manchester United closed the gap to Manchester City to just the goal difference, although Manchester City have the opportunity to once again re-establish their three-point advantage when they take on Wigan athletic on Monday night.

However, closing down the gap was the best Manchester United could do on the evening and it was started off by Paul Scholes, who recently returned from retirement on the request from Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United has been suffering a number of injury problems of late, which has meant that youngsters like Danny Welbeck have been getting a number of opportunities.

The England striker did not disappoint in the match against Bolton as well. He was on the score sheet, as his second goal gave Manchester United in the comfortable lead they were demanding. Paul Scholes scored in the injury time of the first half to the Manchester United the lead. Danny Welbeck then doubled Manchester United’s advantage in the second half, although all was not rosy for Manchester United, as Wayne Rooney missed a penalty. Michael Carrick then continued his goal scoring form in recent weeks to put the game beyond any doubt in the 83rd minute.

“With everything he has got going for him, he could be capable of being in the team every week. You have got a kid busting a gut and desperate to impress everyone — the supporters, management and staff and, in this present day and age, that is worth its weight in gold. He has got what a lot of young players have not got in this day and age — he is focused, enthusiastic and wants to do it,” Former United star Lou Macari said in praise of Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck Wants to Sign

Danny Welbeck has handed Man United a massive boost as he signalled his intention to stay at Man Utd, and sign a new five year contract. It is thought that next month the 20 year old England striker will sit down with club officials and discuss a £45,000-a-week deal for five years.

It is thought that United are giving Welbeck the deal to show their gratitude for the incredible form he has been in since he returned to United from a spell away on loan at Sunderland. Welbeck who enjoyed a good last season with Sunderland has 18 months currently left on his contract that currently grabs him £15,000 a week without bonuses. It was revealed in the summer how initial talks were held and they were thought to be trebling his wages whilst extending the young Englishman’s deal for a further five years.

United have been busy trying to tie down their exciting new youngsters with better deals. New deals are thought to be being offered to the likes of Smalling, Cleverley and Hernandez, as well as Welbeck. But finally United aim to lure the striker into a new deal with a final wage of £65,000 should he ultimately trigger appearance and goal targets.

Welbeck is expected to sit out Tuesday’s home Champions League match with Benfica because Alex Ferguson hunts for the win required to top the group and dodge the big name teams in the knockout stages.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “That is probably the bonus out of it — you hope you do finish top. First of all there are certain teams there and that is one issue but the most important one is that second game is at Old Trafford and that is always an advantage.”
