This led to his first loan spell at Preston North end in the January transfer window of 2010. In the remaining six months of the season, Danny Welbeck made eight appearances for Preston North end and scored two goals in the process. He returned to Manchester United at the end of the season, but was soon loaned out to Sunderland the following season.

The Sunderland loan move, however, brought a significant change to his career. Even though Sunderland manager Steve Bruce did not play him as a striker, Danny Welbeck made incredible progress playing in the wings. He impressed so much during his spell at Sunderland that Steve Bruce conceded that they will be looking at opportunities to sign the England international. However, Manchester United denied any intention of doing so and recalled him at the end of the 2011 season. Danny Welbeck made his international debut for England, despite being eligible for Ghana, in the 1-1 draw against Ghana. He replaced Ashley Young in the second half of the match to play against the side that had courted him.
